Two important exhibitions highlighting the formative years of the Penwith Society of Arts in Cornwall run in conjunction with the present-day members showing in the Society’s Main Gallery. The exhibition in Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Penzance, concerns the period from 1949 to 1960, the second two decades are on show in the Society’s New Gallery in St Ives.

In a departure from its customary annual exhibition at Plymouth’s Artmill Gallery the Society opens a three month long show in the Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Three shows open simultaneously in the Penwith Gallery that have a neat symbiotic relationship reflecting the current and the past in the Society. The members have mounted their second show for the year in conjunction with an invitation to include the display of a work from the constructionist Terry Pope and a unique exhibition of lens-based studies and commentary by the photographer and writer, Michael Carter.

Following the highly successful exhibition of the Penwith Society at the London Group’s home gallery, the Cello Factory in London’s Waterloo in the spring of this year, sevent-four of the London Group collective are showing throughout the month in conjunction with the Society in the Penwith Gallery, arranged to coincide with the St Ives September Festival.
